It goes without saying that every crew busts their hump each week, working hard to raise the bar and stay in the game… but we said it anyway. Below, Phil Collins (not of Genesis, sadly) speaks on behalf of his crew, Fanny Pak, and gives thanks to everyone who’s left nice comments for them on Cancel your plans, lock your doors and turn your cell phone ringers to “silent” mode! Because tomorrow afternoon, the only place you’re gonna wanna be is at home, watching the Real World: Hollywood cast gather round for the very first time since the cameras stopped rolling. And even better? The whole show is coming at you LIVE. Which means, you’ll get to see Bri’s “Aw, hell no!” face (and Will’s crocodile tears) in real-time! With From G’s To Gents kicking off on Tuesday (think Flavor of Love Girls: Charm School for the gangsta set) we here at RC couldn’t help but think back about some of the most famous G-to-G transitions in the history of hip-hop culture. A few names we came up with:
• Shawn Corey Carter to Jay-Z. Not only has dude gone from drug dealer to bona fide mogul, but the rapper, Roc-A-Fella head honcho and on-again, off-again retiree has done it all with Beyonce on his arm. Hmm, from the projects of Bed-Stuy to the owner of the NJ Nets? Daaaaamn, Jay! Not such a “hard-knock life” anymore, is it?
• Sean John Combs to Puff Daddy to P. Diddy to Diddy: Nobody knows how to change their name or rocka pair of indoor sunglasses like Diddy. (Except maybe Usher). And the producer-turned-rapper-turned Sean John impresario (and Bad Boy records founder) has come a long way from the Harlem projects. From barely making ends meet to Making the Band? This playa’s no joke. Now, go get him some cheesecake, b-tch!
• Curtis James Jackson III to 50 Cent: Need we say more? This oft-shot rapper has described his childhood (in South Jamaica, Queens) by saying “When I wasn’t killing time in school, I was sparring in the gym or selling crack.” Now he’s killing time making #1 hits and mega million-dollar deals with Vitamin Water. But you can still find him in da clubs
